Hints, Trick & Home Remedies

 

These are some of the hints, tricks and home remedies that our vets, other breeders and friends have shared with us over the years. We would like to share them with you, too.

IF AT ANYTIME YOU THINK SOMETHING IS WRONG

CALL YOUR VET OR LOCAL EMERGENCY ANIMAL HOSPITAL

 

  • DIARRHEA: Give 1/2tsp of Kaopectate after each loose stool. Another way to firm the stool is to give a small amount of pumpkin (no spice) or sprinkle a little Metamucil on your puppy’s food. If your puppy has diarrhea for more than 2 days give ½ tsp of children’s Pedialyte to replace electrolytes.

  • COUGHING:  Give 1/tsp of children’s Robtiussin every 6 hours

  • SNEEZING:  Give 1-2mg per pound of children’s Benedryl Do not exceed 50mg

  • NAILS: If you happen to cut your puppies nail too close while trimming. Rub bleeding nail in a bar of soap to stop bleeding. Or apply a mix of cornstarch and water to stop bleeding.

  • EARS: To prevent water build-up in your puppy’s ear always use ear powder. Also use ear powder prior to plucking. If your dogs ears smell like yeast apply a small amount of feminine yeast cream to the ear this will help clear up problem.

  • ODORS: If your puppy gets sprayed by a skunk apply 3% hydrogen peroxide to ¼ cup of baking soda with 3 drops of dish washing soap. Wash puppy with this solution. Do not bottle this mixture – it will explode.

  • UPPER RESPIRATORY INFECTION (URI): Use a humidifier in the room most of the night.

  • INSECT BITES: ½ of a Children’s Benedryl

  • CAR SICKNESS: Feed 3-4 Ginger Snap cookies prior to car trip. This is for adult dogs only. DO NOT force your puppy to eat ginger snaps.

  • TEETHING:  Soak a rope toy or washcloth in water and freeze overnight give to puppy.

  • SHOCK:  Give 3 drops of Rescue Remedy (available at pet stores) in the mouth and rush to your Vet.

  • DUNG EATING:  Purchase Forbid. Available at Pet Shops they do not like the taste.

  • SCOOTING: If your puppy is scooting on the ground. Take her to a groomer to have her anal gland squeezed and cleaned properly.

  • HOT SPOTS: Apply Apple Cider Vinegar 3-4 times a day for 1 week.

  • CHEWING:  Apply Apple Bitters, Stinky Perfume or lemon juice to the item. 

  • VOMITING: Replace food with Chicken and Rice. Slowly reintroduce the normal food. If this persist for more than a day, take your puppy to the vet immediately.

  • TEETH CLEANING: For Shiny Healthy teeth give chew bones this will also help remove plaque. (DINGO Bones are great).

  • ANTIBIOTICS: If your dog is ever given antibiotics, give 1-2 tsp of plain yogurt daily to replace Healthy bacteria.

  • OVERWEIGHT: Feed green beans once a day. This will provide fullness for your dog.
